A Day in the Life of a Director of Photography
💬 Well, that's nice of you to say!
Yasmin from Edelweiss Pianos

On your social channels, you’ve got three seconds to stop your audience from scrolling.
Start with a hook: Use a bold claim, a problem statement, or a striking visual. Remember, don’t sell your products, features or services statistics, show how it affects your audience's real life.
“People don’t want to buy a quarter-inch drill. They want a quarter-inch hole!” – Theodore Levitt
If you don’t grab attention before second three, you’ve likely lost the viewer.
How can I apply this?
Audit your last video: Does the hook land before the first beat of the background music?

There are two types of case study in this world, those a cute dog and those without... this was the former.

We stopped by The Old Hall estate to capture video content ahead of a truly fancy wedding, in an equally fancy venue.

It's not every day you get to see how amazing food products are made en masse and to such high standards...unless you are from DC Norris, that is. Gimbals were raised out of respect for the culinary mastery which we captured to help demonstrate the immense capability this team can offer.

The team hoisted their cameras and settled in for a cosy Christmas shoot, working with @hillgroupuk From the reviews, it sounds like the Christmas cookies were a standout in the catering. 🍪

🎄 Christmas came early for the team! A wonderful and wonderfully festive shoot with the @createdbyhill What a way to wrap up the year.
✨Thank you all @laurenkmoore @phoebe_gillen @dan_stoney @snapperherbs @jackweightmanharton @louisesykesstylist @lucychampion__ @keshy6 @keshandhattie @hatld_ @vee_roz @will92thompson

The team ventured to Newcastle to capture two case studies showcasing Guardian's fantastic warm roof product.

It's always a pleasure to capture conferences, especially when you know the leading experts in a field are all in one room and mingling, exchanging ideas and progressing important areas of study.

A lovely way to start the day, Chloe, The Creativity Director led a creativity, marketing and social content workshop to show us how we can allow ourselves to be more creative.
The two takeaways that have stuck in my memory are...
1) Always remember empathy, look at what you're posting through the eyes of the audience and how it will make them feel.
2) Ideas can be 'crazy' or 'out there', but they should still be appropriate for the intended audience. Dial it up if it's the same as everybody else, dial it down if it could alienate the people it intends to support.

Check Chloe out for all things creativity, including; Creativity-nurturing Workshops, Social Media Marketing Audits and Creative Messaging & Positioning.

In terms of a case study, this one really stands out for us. It paints a full picture of an authentic human experience and how their new home impacts the whole family and fits within their lifestyle.

Getting Perfection with Direction ✨In this clip, you can hear the dynamic between the Director, the Director of Photography, and our talented actor as they work together to capture the perfect shot.

We had the joy of attending The Marketing Meetup, where Sarah Robb was 'Stripping the 'BS' from Brand Strategy. I'm usually wary when people make large claims of making a confusing thing simpler, however, Sarah's talk really did what it said on the tin.

Aside from avoiding annoying people with frustrating, nonsensical jargon, removing the BS from Brand Strategy allows wider teams to buy-in to Brand Strategy processes. Jordan and I came away both feeling very inspired to implement some of the changes we felt could help us strengthen the De·fine Creative brand.
We're yet to dive into Sarah and Rachel's book Re-Brand Right, but if it's half as good as Sarah's presentation, we'll be very pleased.
If you've not been to one of The Marketing Meetup events, we'd recommend it. See their events here: https://themarketingmeetup.com/

What does a day in the life of a Director of Photography look like? 🎥Watch as @jakobcizic gives you a rundown of what the DoP does on a shoot and the considerations which make all the difference.

'They've been able to take a very brief idea and turn it into a reality, above and beyond anything we could have hoped for.'
✨After meeting Yasmin on a project at her previous company, she reached out to work together again, one of our favourite compliments. 'It's like working with a second family' 🙏
